The Material Industrial Engineer will lead initiatives to eliminate the waste of time, money, materials, person-hours, machine time, energy, and other resources that do not generate value at Spring Hill GPS.
Work is of a technical nature and focused on making complex supply chain processes more efficient, which involves understanding the systematic cross functionality of several departments within Spring Hill GPS and the General Motors enterprise. The Material Industrial Engineer will primarily lead and support complex labor rebalance, material layout design, material flow, and material automation projects that involve collaboration between several in-plant departments, Headquarters engineering organizations, UAW Team Members, and third-party suppliers and contractors.
The ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced manufacturing environment is critical to your success at General Motors. Significant use of independent judgment is required, as well as the ability to think critically and creatively to solve problems and drive projects forward. Exceptional relationship building, communication, and organizational skills are needed to effectively plan and execute complex projects.
Additionally, a strong systems-based mindset, knowledge of material automation systems, and proficiency in developing optimal material routing, warehousing layouts, and labor operations are required.
What you’ll do:
- Drive improvements to material flow, including material storage and dock strategies, to support continuous improvement activities and rebalance opportunities
- Develop optimized warehousing layouts to minimize job utilizations, maximize material flow efficiency, and ensure optimal material delivery routes
- Collaborate with logistics teams to optimize dock schedules and parts management
- Develop and drive Operational Excellence (OpEx) projects by evaluating current job functions for rebalance opportunities or opportunities to drive increased material flow efficiency and/or reductions in labor cost
- Lead and support Lean Material Strategies (LMS) initiatives and support the adherence of Short Lead Time (SLT) principles
- Design work operations that meet safety, ergonomic, quality, takt, and efficiency requirements
- Design operations to safely and efficiently interact with material automation
- Partner with engineering, operations, and other organizations to design new material packaging, bulk material gravity flow racks, dollies, and material staging stands to ensure designs meet quality, safety, ergonomic, and throughput requirements
- Collaborate with multiple departments to determine space allocation needs and drive the layout creation, revision, buyoff, and sustainment process using AutoCAD
- Collaborate with and provide robust supply chain floor support to UAW Team Members, Group Leaders, and other relevant partners to drive improvements to safety, ergonomics, throughput, quality, and standardized work
- Develop and maintain accurate time studies using motion analysis and standard time data (APS, STDS, GMOS)
- Develop and maintain clear and accurate work instructions (cyclic, noncyclic, and non-standard tasks) to ensure team member safety and operational effectiveness
- Assist programming and making logic and systematic changes to a fleet of automated mobile equipment from multiple vendors
Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related degree, or equivalent experience

- Knowledge of robotic systems (robotic cells, cobots, or material automation) or general programming
- Knowledge of labor optimization tools and time study analysis
- Ability to work off-shift, weekends, or overtime to support project implementations or as needed
What will give you a competitive edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- 2+ years of engineering experience
- Significant educational or work experience in supply chain management
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or computer-aided drafting and layout tools
- Proficiency in human factors engineering, safety engineering, or ergonomic analysis
- Experience with data mining, data analytics, and/or statistical analysis
