About the role:
As the Engineering Group Manager, Information Access & Protection, you will lead a highly talented team responsible for designing and implementing product development information governance policies and controls. This role is critical to enabling effective collaboration across GM and with external partners while protecting intellectual property, supporting export compliance obligations, and safeguarding future products, technologies, and services.
This position sits within Global Technology Operations and supports engineering collaboration models tied to access and security, intellectual property protection, and export compliance across GM’s global product development ecosystem.
Success in this role requires strong technical and business judgment, the ability to lead through influence, and a passion for building strong global partnerships. You will work closely with IT, Identity and Access Management, Legal, Finance, Corporate Development, and engineering organizations across GM, while also engaging with international joint venture and alliance partners.
What You'll Do:
Lead information access and protection strategy:

Own global responsibility for information governance, access management, and approval workflows for GTO

Develop, implement, and sustain policies that protect GM intellectual property and support export compliance requirements

Provide strategic guidance to leaders, senior management teams, technology domains, and business development teams on intellectual property governance

Help shape and execute GM’s information protection and governance strategy in support of partnerships, collaborations, and co-development initiatives
Drive cross-functional execution:
-
Lead collaboration with Business Enablement, IT, Legal, and engineering teams to implement governance processes across GM Engineering
-
Partner with organizations such as GM Defense to strengthen IP protection and export compliance procedures
-
Build and maintain a strong global network of indirect team members and stakeholders to drive consistent governance practices across regions and partnerships
-
Represent GTO in enterprise technology initiatives by defining governance requirements, raising risk awareness, and supporting implementation
Enable innovation while managing risk:
-
Enforce policies and controls that reduce intellectual property and export control risk while enabling enterprise tools, systems, and processes that accelerate product development

Work closely with the Intellectual Property Agreements team to ensure GM governance, protection, and compliance standards are embedded in third-party agreements

Drive clarity, transparency, and speed by aligning contractual requirements with GM governance policies

Support GTO quarterly Officer Forums and contribute to strategic decision-making and execution activities
Lead people and operations:
-
Mentor, coach, and develop team members while fostering a positive, high-performing culture

Lead and participate in highly complex, cross-functional projects
-
Develop a forward-looking vision for information governance and access models that support the evolving needs of the global enterprise

Establish and manage budgets, resource plans, and execution priorities for the team

Lead and support special projects as needed

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field

8+ years of experience in product development, including understanding of global product development organizations and joint venture environments

8+ years of experience with engineering processes and tools deployment
-
Understanding of engineering principles and intellectual property protection concepts
-
Understanding of basic export compliance policies and practices as implemented by General Motors and GTO
-
Experience working across technical and business functions to solve complex problems
-
Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization
-
Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills
-
Experience leading, inspiring, and developing high-performing teams
-
Budget management and resource planning experience
-
Flexibility to work with global teams across time zones, including outside normal business hours when needed
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business, or a related field

DFSS Black Belt Certification
-
5+ years of experience with ISO 9001 internal auditing in a product development environment
-
Experience structuring enterprise-level security models, including user roles, access controls, and procedural governance frameworks
-
5+ years of experience with IP protection policies in organizations that contract with U.S. government agencies
-
Experience working in highly regulated, global, or partnership-heavy environments
