The Vehicle Material Cost Specialist (AKA Cost Engineer or CE) is responsible to create, analyze and validate component material costs and targets. The cost engineer working in the PPCO / Product Program Cost Optimization team will be responsible for generating ground-up / detailed material cost estimates that encompass both piece price estimations and production tooling estimations.  Collaboration with key internal cross functional peers is essential; the selected candidate will have a working relationship with the product engineering team, the purchasing and supply chain team, the vehicle program team, our global joint venture partners in China, and to an extent the external component supply base.

- Works independently; receives minimal guidance. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

COMPLEXITY

- Identifies and devises solutions based on limited information and precedent. Uses evaluation and judgement to solve problems that are new to the organization and require a deep level of experience and strategic thought to create a solution.
- Enhances relationships and networks with senior internal/external partners who are not familiar with subject matter and often require persuasion. Uses data and analysis to demonstrate the value of a project, anticipating, and addressing objections and or concerns.
- Often effects change in broader functional area without direct exercise of command, using persuasion in situations where reaching agreement may be hindered by differing opinions, past practices, or experiences.

SCOPE AND IMPACT

- Challenges and problems are of a diverse scope with multiple moving parts, where developing a plan and viewing the whole picture is a significant challenge itself. Work is done independently and is reviewed at critical points.
- Owns the development and delivery of solutions, driving cross team and group efforts. Leads by example, taking responsibility for their own actions, acknowledging mistakes, and holding themselves accountable for achieving goals. Addresses and evaluates a diverse range of issues using innovative methods and proposing alternative approaches.
- Serves as a mentor to more junior level employees, providing coaching and guidance on difficult issues.
- Has significant operational impact across their function.

Job Description
This role involves a high level of independent judgment, initiative, creativity, and the management of multiple estimates that focus specifically on identifying accurate cost estimates as well as proposed cost reductions. The cost engineer will have exposure to the next generation of automotive vehicles while working with leading edge automotive experts and technologies.  Key Responsibilities include:
- The candidate should be able to analyze, organize, and understand large amounts of data.
- Comprehensive manufacturing process knowledge is required.  An understanding of regional difference in manufacturing processes / assumptions is helpful. 
- Be an active partner with the internal GPSC purchasing team – aid in providing a fair yet competitive component cost for GM. 
- Occasional domestic travel to supplier facilities for enhanced costing collaboration and support of the specific engineering / purchasing team. 
- Support the assigned GM SMT from a tooling and piece price perspective.

Required Skills:

  • Experience: 5 years of experience in manufacturing processes, negotiations with suppliers, product focus, and influencing the purchasing and engineering teams.

  • Softwares: Office, IA knowledge

  • English advanced

  • Softskills: communication, quality orientation, negotiation 

  • Availability to travel
