Descripción

The Team:

The Mechatronic Software Platform (MSP) organization enables GM’s Software Defined Vehicle by making sure controllers, benches, and development vehicles are correctly instrumented and ready for calibration and software work.

The instrumentation team operates across many microcontroller families, ECUs, and electrical architectures. We sit at the intersection of ECU hardware, infrastructure software, calibration, and integration, working with SWILs, calibrators, hardware teams, and tool suppliers to ensure measurement, calibration, and trace/debug tooling work reliably on SDV platforms.

The Role:

We are looking for a hands-on Instrumentation Integration Engineer to own SDV instrumentation integration for infrastructure software. This role is part of the Infrastructure Calibration & Release team. This is a doing role, focused on real benches and hardware across multiple microcontrollers and ECU variants. You will ensure controllers are properly instrumented, tools are configured correctly, and issues are found and fixed quickly so development, integration, and calibration can proceed without delay.

Who Thrives Here:

  • Engineers who like to be on the bench, hands-on with real hardware across many microcontrollers, ECUs, and electrical architectures.
  • People who become the go-to resource when calibration, measurement, trace, or A2L details go sideways.
  • Individuals who are organized, detail oriented, and able to manage many instrumentation variants and benches without losing rigor.
  • Teammates who communicate clearly, move with urgency, and keep SWILs, calibrators, and hardware teams aligned on what is ready and what is blocked.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Integrate and maintain instrumentation hardware (e.g., calibration add-on boards, high-speed measurement interfaces, trace pods, vertical adapter modules) on SDV controllers and benches.
  • Configure, debug, and support calibration and measurement workflows, including XCP on DoIP, A2L/A2ML content, DAQ/measurement setups, and ECU flashing.
  • Bring up and maintain SDV calibration and farm benches across multiple microcontrollers, ECUs, and electrical architectures, ensuring they are usable and reliable.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation issues end-to-end: hardware wiring, schematics, connectors, licenses, tool versions, configuration files, and interface definitions.
  • Develop and maintain instrumentation documentation (e.g., SOR Appendix T, “Development Tool Requirements,” and “Bill of Design”) for SDV and VIP controller programs.
  • Work with external tool and hardware suppliers and internal ECU/DRE teams to resolve hardware constraints, tool defects, and integration gaps.
  • Provide practical coaching to SWILs, calibrators, and other engineers on required instrumentation hardware, tool versions, and configurations.
  • Use scripting and AI-assisted tools where appropriate to speed up troubleshooting, documentation, and risk write-ups so decisions and fixes land in days, not weeks.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience with ECU instrumentation, calibration tooling, or embedded hardware integration (automotive or similar domain); experience level is flexible.
  • Practical experience with calibration/instrumentation tools such as INCA or similar environments and related measurement/flash tooling.
  • Familiarity with XCP (CAN/Ethernet/DoIP), UDS, or related measurement and diagnostic communication protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret ECU schematics, interface documents, and instrumentation add-on boards, and to identify issues that affect bench usability.
  • Experience working with microcontroller-based ECU hardware and lab environments (benches, harnesses, trace connectors, power supplies, etc.)
  • Knowledgeable about industry standards for instrumentation, such as ASAM (ASAP-3, MCD-3MC, MCD-2MC, MCD-1 XCP) and Nexus 5001 (IEEE-ISTO 5001, JTAG, Aurora).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and tooling, with the ability to isolate issues and drive them to closure.
  • Strong attention to detail around versions, configurations, and controller/instrumentation variants across multiple ECUs and architectures.
  • Clear, concise communication skills and the ability to work directly with SWILs, calibrators, hardware engineers, and external partners.
  • Willingness to spend regular time on benches and in labs, working directly on real hardware.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • 5+ years of experience in ECU instrumentation, calibration tools, embedded hardware integration, or SDV-related infrastructure work.
  • Deep, hands-on experience with calibration and measurement environments (e.g., INCA-class tools), high-speed ETK/XETK-style hardware, and ECU flashing workflows.
  • Experience enabling or supporting XCP on DoIP, including security unlock strategies and integration of security utilities into measurement and calibration toolchains.
  • Experience with Lauterbach debugging hardware, TRACE32, and PRACTICE scripting.
  • Familiarity with trace/debug tools and associated scripting workflows for MCU-based controllers.
  • Experience creating or owning instrumentation/tooling requirement documents for ECU programs.
  • Proficiency with scripting (e.g., Python) or basic automation to streamline instrumentation workflows and checks.
  • Demonstrated ability to turn tribal instrumentation knowledge into clear, reusable guides and training.
