About the Role
The Smart Collect team builds the platform that determines what vehicle data to collect, validates collection configurations, deploys them across fleets, and monitors the resulting data from vehicle to cloud. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to develop the services, integrations, automation, and end-to-end observability that power this platform. Scaling high-quality data collection is essential to enabling autonomous and eyes-off driving. Your work will ensure that data flows reliably from vehicles into our AI/ML and analytics platforms, with strong guarantees around quality, traceability, privacy, and operational excellence. You will collaborate with AI research, data engineering, vehicle engineering, data science, product, data quality, and operations teams to deliver dependable services and intuitive tools that scale across General Motors programs.
What You’ll Do
-
Design and develop APIs, domain services, event-driven workflows, and vehicle-recording metadata pipelines.
-
Build services and user experiences for defining collection events and triggers, selecting data, generating and validating configurations, deploying campaigns, and monitoring results.
-
Design version-aware workflows that reconcile signals, schemas, hardware capabilities, and software compatibility across vehicle platforms.
-
Improve visibility into campaign health, fleet coverage, recording volume, ingestion latency, and data quality.
-
Lead technical design and deliver cross-team initiatives involving vehicle recording, fleet management, data platforms, autonomy, privacy, product, and program teams.
-
Raise the engineering bar through architecture reviews, automated testing, code reviews, technical mentorship, and production support.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
-
7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of production systems.
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
-
Proficiency in Python or another modern backend programming language.
-
Strong experience designing scalable backend services, APIs, and relational data models.
-
Experience with event-driven architectures, asynchronous workflows, data ingestion, testing, debugging, and production operations.
-
Ability to communicate technical decisions and lead work across organizational boundaries.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
-
Experience with PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Google Cloud (including BigQuery and Pub/Sub), Kafka, observability platforms, or data-quality systems.
-
Experience with FastAPI, React, or TypeScript.
-
Experience in autonomous vehicles, robotics, automotive software, embedded systems, or other safety-critical domains.
-
Familiarity with sensor data, vehicle data collection, fleet management, deployment control planes, or software-version compatibility.
-
Experience addressing privacy, data governance, resource constraints, or multi-environment deployments.
