The Role

This 12-week Operations internship will be based in a GM Automotive Parts warehouse and drives the operational efforts of GM’s Customer Care and Aftersales organization.  The position supervises a team of union-represented operations employees, or a departmental function in a warehouse processing center or distribution center.  The Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the department workforce to ensure accurate and timely parts shipments to customers.

With direct guidance from the General Supervisor, you will motivate hourly operations employees and business partners through effective communication, training, coaching, development, recognition, and supervision. You will demonstrate expertise of the processes your team is required to perform and ensure your team members are effectively performing job responsibilities utilizing standardized methods.

The Team

The Customer Care and Aftersales warehouse operations team helps ensure that General Motors parts are processed and shipped accurately and on time. The team works in a fast-paced environment where safety, quality, teamwork, and continuous improvement are central to daily operations.

You will learn from and collaborate with General Supervisors, warehouse operations employees, business partners, union representatives, and other members of the management team. Together, they maintain reliable warehouse processes, support employee development, resolve operational challenges, and improve the experience of customers who depend on General Motors parts.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide instructions to direct reports on course of action and serves as a resource for them on standardized work, quality standards and processes within the area, as well as relevant company policies and procedures.

  • Support daily warehouse operations under the direction of a General Supervisor.

  • Learn how to communicate standardized work, quality expectations, processes, company policies, and procedures.

  • Assist with training, coaching, development, recognition, and engagement activities for operations employees.

  • Support the assignment of work and monitor progress to help ensure tasks are completed safely, accurately, and on time.

  • Help identify and address operational issues, resolve problems, and proactively reduce disruptions.

  • Support employee training and rotation activities to maintain operational flexibility and continuity.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement through tools such as layered audits and other continuous improvement methods.

  • Support performance against safety, people, quality, responsiveness, and cost measures.

  • Promote a safe work environment by following and reinforcing workplace safety rules and policies.

  • Apply the principles of the General Motors Global Manufacturing System and lean operations.

  • Build effective working relationships with employees, union representatives, business partners, and management.

  • Support efforts to evaluate team performance and improve operational processes.

  • Assist with administrative activities such as timekeeping and maintaining departmental records and reports.

  • Recommend process improvements and support the delivery of solutions across teams.

  • Collaborate with experienced team members, seek guidance, and apply feedback to solve operational challenges.

  • Complete a project that creates value for the warehouse operation and present your findings to executive leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business, operations, supply chain, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.

  • Must be graduating between December 2027 and June 2028.

  • Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week, during the summer internship.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • High level of integrity, initiative, accountability, and trustworthiness.

  • Ability to adapt to ambiguity and take ownership of assigned responsibilities.

  • Customer-focused approach to innovative problem-solving.

  • Partnership and teamwork skills, with an interest in learning from and sharing knowledge with coworkers.

Start Date

  • Start dates for our Summer 2027 internships are May 24th and June 14th of 2027 

Work Location

This role follows an onsite work arrangement and requires the intern to report full-time to one of three General Motors Automotive Parts warehouses: Memphis, Tennessee; Warren, Michigan; or Burton, Michigan.

Schedule Requirement: This 12-week summer internship requires full-time availability, 40 hours per week, on either the first shift (6:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) or second shift (3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m.), as assigned

GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program -  to help facilitate administration of relocation benefits, please apply using the permanent address you would move from.
