Role Summary:
In this role you’ll lead strategy and advanced technology development for power inverters and power electronics (PE) system design & integration to meet GM’s future Electric Vehicle (EV) portfolio needs.
Hybrid: This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Set strategic direction, coordinate technology roadmaps, and provide technical leadership for power inverters and PE system design & integration
- Develop and manage technology for advanced power inverters and PE system design
- Lead advanced technology development on power inverters, including design, analysis, testing, and report out via advanced technical work process
- Responsible for developing advanced inverter and PE solutions to meet key performance and cost targets for future EVs by working collaboratively with Product Engineering, Systems Engineering, Modeling, Analysis, Cost Engineering, Planning, Manufacturing, and Program teams
- Specify system requirements, including balancing interdisciplinary requirements for optimized system and subsystem performance
- Coordinate efforts of technical support staff and the performance of assigned projects
- Lead global advanced benchmarking activities. Stay abreast of new technology and competitive products
- Utilize methods and tools such as modeling, simulation, systems analysis, and optimization to apply to system requirements definition
- Coach, train, mentor, and provide technical direction and guidance to team members
- Actively pursue cost reduction, performance, and efficiency improvement advanced projects in the inverter and PE integration space
- Research state-of-the-art and trends in inverters and PE integration across industry and academia
- Provide technical expertise, direction, and guidance to program and systems teams
- Teach inverter and PE principles, and communicate and share knowledge across the organization
- Establish and maintain relationships with key university labs, national laboratories, and experts from key professional organizations (i.e., IEEE, SAE)
Qualifications:
- Master of Science or PhD in Engineering or related field
- 5 or more years of experience in automotive power electronics
- Extensive knowledge in inverter and PE theory and principles
- Extensive knowledge in design, development, and testing of inverters and PE systems
- Experience in analysis, design, development, and specification of PE for EV application
- Experience in implementing PE solutions in production
- Understanding of electrified vehicle system and integration
- High level of technical problem-solving skills and experience to address vehicle level issues
- Fluency in using commercial tools for modeling and simulation of PE systems
- Hands-on experience with PE testing and working in HV laboratory environment
- Experience leading projects with multiple suppliers to deliver best-in-class products
- Demonstrated experience of successfully leading multiple advanced technology projects
- PE component specification development for automotive applications
- High level of project management skills and the ability to influence those that are not direct reports
- High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with domestic and international business partners
- Ability to work non-standard hours to collaborate with overseas suppliers
- Available to travel to support supplier engagement and conferences
- Strong analytical ability to dissect and propose solutions to complex problems including those with high ambiguity
- High level of oral and written communication skills. Ability to create and present information to leadership, peers, and customers in a clear and concise manner
- Able to work with minimum supervision and full autonomy
- DFSS Black Belt certification
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field with focus on PE
- Experience with wide-band gap semiconductor device-based PE systems
- Recognized technical expertise through patents, publications, and presentations in PE systems
- Comprehensive knowledge of inverter / PE design, key component selection, and design verification
- Hands-on experience of vehicle and component level benchmarking of competitive inverters / PE systems
