Descripción
The Role:
The Manufacturing Excellence IE Intern will support the development and deployment of digital tools that improve workforce planning, data usability, and standardized work across GM manufacturing operations.
A primary focus of this role will be converting existing files and workflows from Microsoft Office tools to Google Workspace tools. The intern will help assess current files, preserve data integrity and functionality, standardize templates, and document practical ways for teams to use Google Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Drive effectively.
The intern will also assist with the development and deployment of a new, digitized version of the Global Workbook Manpower Tracking tool. This work may include gathering user needs, helping define requirements, supporting solution development, testing functionality and data, preparing user guidance, and assisting with rollout and adoption.
The Team:
The Manufacturing Excellence IE team develops scalable processes, standards, and digital solutions that improve the effectiveness of GM manufacturing operations.
The team partners with plant operations, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, information technology, and other cross-functional stakeholders to simplify work, improve visibility to critical information, and enable data-driven decisions.
What You’ll Do:
- Inventory and evaluate existing Microsoft-based files, templates, and workflows targeted for conversion to Google Workspace.
- Convert and standardize selected files in Google Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Drive while maintaining data integrity, usability, and appropriate access controls.
- Identify opportunities to simplify spreadsheets, reduce manual work, improve consistency, and establish repeatable standards for converted files.
- Assist with requirements gathering, process mapping, and user feedback for the digitized Global Workbook Manpower Tracking tool.
- Support the development, configuration, testing, and deployment of the new manpower tracking solution.
- Create test scenarios, validate outputs, document procedures, and help prepare training or communications for end users.
- Collaborate with plant operations, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, IT, and other stakeholders to resolve issues and implement practical improvements.
- Potential project: convert and pilot a prioritized set of legacy workforce-planning files while supporting the launch of the digitized Global Workbook Manpower Tracking tool, measuring adoption and identifying opportunities for further improvement.
- Support data-quality checks, reconciliations, and issue resolution across Global Workbook inputs, workforce-planning data, and reporting outputs.
- Help document current-state processes, standardized work, and plant task inventories; identify opportunities to simplify, automate, consolidate, or eliminate non-value-added work.
- Assist with dashboards and analyses of workforce and productivity measures such as manpower utilization, Hours per Unit, Cost per Unit, percent Value Added, and Minutes per Hour.
- Participate in plant and cross-functional working sessions to gather requirements, capture decisions, track actions, and share lessons learned across sites.
- Support pilot and deployment activities, including user-acceptance testing, access and role documentation, training materials, change communications, and post-launch issue tracking.
- Gain exposure to future, launch, and production-support work, including plan-for-every-site reviews, launch readiness, standard-work deployment, and continuous-improvement projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, or a related field.
- Must be graduating between December 2027 and June 2030
- Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.
- Must be willing to work in a hybrid office environment and travel to GM manufacturing facilities as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets, including formulas, data organization, and spreadsheet troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace tools such as Sheets, Docs, Slides, Drive, and Forms.
- Experience converting, standardizing, or improving business files, templates, reports, or workflows.
- Exposure to Apps Script, VBA, Python, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, or other automation and data-visualization tools.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing, industrial engineering, process improvement, standard work, workforce planning, or manufacturing operations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, documentation, and project-management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with plant operations, engineering, IT, and other cross-functional teams.
