Description
The Role:
We are seeking a highly capable Sub systems Diagnostics Engineer to lead the definition of diagnostic requirements and strategies for Vehicle Dynamics systems, including Driveline, Trailer Brakes, Vehicle Motion Control (VMC), and Vehicle Dynamic State Estimation (VDSE).
This role is responsible for translating vehicle- and subsystem-level functional requirements into robust diagnostic solutions that enable fault detection, fault isolation, serviceability, safety, and long-term product quality. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of systems engineering, diagnostics architecture, embedded controls, software development, analytics, validation, and supplier management.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong systems engineer who can operate effectively in ambiguous environments, decompose complex problems into structured diagnostic requirements, and influence technical direction across multiple organizations. Experience defining diagnostic strategies, DTC architecture, fault detection methods, diagnostic maturation and recovery logic, remedial actions, customer notifications, and diagnostic data requirements is highly desirable.
This position requires close collaboration with Functional System Architects (FSAs), Diagnostic System Architects (DSAs), Software, Controls, Calibration, Validation, OBD, Quality, Safety, and supplier teams to ensure diagnostics are implemented consistently and effectively throughout the product development lifecycle.
What You’ll do:
- Own sub system diagnostic requirements development for Vehicle Dynamics subsystems including Driveline, Trailering, VMC, and VDSE.
- Define diagnostic strategies, DTC architectures, fault detection methods, enable/inhibit conditions, maturation and recovery logic, remedial actions, and customer notification requirements.
- Develop diagnostic data requirements including Freeze Frame, Figure of Merit (FOM), Rolling Data Buffer, event-triggered data collection, and diagnostic analytics requirements.
- Translate vehicle-level functional requirements and failure modes into detailed diagnostic requirements suitable for production software implementation.
- Lead diagnostic design reviews with internal stakeholders and suppliers, ensuring alignment to GM standards, quality objectives, and compliance requirements.
- Define and maintain subsystem Diagnostic BTS, validation strategies, and diagnostic governance processes.
- Drive robust diagnostic solutions capable of operating reliably across environmental variation, startup conditions, transient power events, communication failures, and component variability.
- Support software teams during implementation, integration, troubleshooting, and issue resolution activities.
- Collaborate with OBD, Safety, Calibration, Validation, Systems, and Software teams to ensure diagnostics meet program milestone commitments.
- Support diagnostic analytics, PHM (Prognostics & Health Management), and field data strategies that improve root-cause analysis, issue detection, and continuous product improvement.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to development of common diagnostic standards, reusable best practices, and technical frameworks across Vehicle Dynamics programs.
- Act as a technical leader for diagnostics within the Vehicle Dynamics organization.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent technical degree / experience.
- 5+ years of experience in embedded controls, systems engineering, diagnostics, software development, or a related engineering field.
- Experience defining and developing diagnostic requirements for production vehicle programs, including fault detection strategies, diagnostic enable/inhibit conditions, DTC implementation, maturation and recovery logic, remedial actions and customer notifications
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and the ability to decompose vehicle- and subsystem-level requirements into implementable diagnostic solutions.
- Working knowledge of automotive diagnostics, communication networks, and mechatronic control systems, including CAN, Ethernet, LIN, diagnostics services, programming, HWIO, power management, and cybersecurity.
- Strong understanding of software development processes, integration, validation, and release activities for embedded systems.
- Familiarity with functional safety concepts and development practices consistent with ISO 26262.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to drive complex technical issues to resolution.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with experience collaborating across software, systems, controls, calibration, validation, quality, and supplier organizations.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, mentoring, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams in a highly collaborative engineering environment.
- Experience with requirements management and software development tools such as DNG ,Jira, Git, and related engineering toolchains.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
- Direct experience in Driveline and/or Trailering mechatronic systems, such as AWD, 4WD, eLSD, eLocker, Trailer Brake controls.
- Experience working with supplier-developed controls and diagnostics, including requirements review, implementation oversight, software integration, technical reviews, and issue resolution.
- Knowledge of OBD diagnostics, regulatory compliance processes, and collaboration with OBD subject matter experts.
- Experience with controller integration, calibration support, SIL/HIL testing, vehicle-level validation, and production launch activities.
- Familiarity with diagnostic analytics, Prognostics & Health Management (PHM), Figure of Merit (FOM), Freeze Frame, Rolling Data Buffer, and event-driven data collection strategies.
- Experience leading root-cause investigations using structured problem-solving techniques such as Fishbone Analysis, 5 Whys, Fault Tree Analysis, RedX, or DFSS.
- Experience with automotive development and validation tools such as CANoe, CANalyzer, Vehicle Spy, ETAS INCA, AutoVAL, Wireshark and PCAP analysis.
- Knowledge of Agile development practices and modern CI/CD environments, including GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and software automation pipelines.
- Experience leveraging AI-assisted engineering tools to improve productivity, analysis, requirements development, or diagnostic design activities.
Why this role matters
This role directly supports GM’s move toward stronger in-house ownership of chassis supervisory controls and diagnostics, faster feature evolution, better software quality, and tighter integration across the vehicle.
It is also a key enabler for improving customer-facing quality, reducing false faults, preserving functional availability in degraded states, and creating differentiated Driveline and Trailering capabilities for future vehicle programs.
GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role. Do not apply for this role if you will need GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This includes direct company sponsorship, entry of GM as the immigration employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization requiring a written submission or other immigration support from the company (e.g., H1-B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, etc.)
