The Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) – Die Casting and Stampings will serve as the technical liaison between GM purchasing, product engineering, manufacturing, and our supply base. In this role, the SQE will work directly with suppliers to resolve manufacturing and quality issues, implement and monitor advanced quality planning systems, and provide technical support throughout the lifecycle of die cast and stamped commodities and components.
What You'll Do:

Assure supplier understanding and compliance with APQP processes and PPAP submission and approval requirements for die cast and stamped components.

Review and approve supplier quality plans, including Control Plans and PFMEAs, for new components and assemblies supporting vehicle launch.

Review supplier manufacturing processes, process controls, and quality systems with emphasis on defect prevention, process capability, and launch readiness.

Facilitate root cause analysis and corrective actions for supplier quality issues related to casting defects, stamping defects, dimensional variation, and downstream manufacturing impact.

Perform on-site supplier visits for root cause analysis, verification of corrective actions, process reviews, and launch readiness assessments.

Implement and monitor supplier part qualification and certification processes, including PPAP and Run at Rate.

Improve supplier quality performance by conducting on-site workshops, providing technical assistance, and driving systemic corrective actions.

Provide technical assistance during supplier launch, change-over, and ongoing production activities.

Assess supplier capability in tooling condition, process parameter control, dimensional control, and special characteristic management to ensure stable product quality.

Evaluate supplier inspection strategies, reaction plans, process capability, and controls for casting- and stamping-related defects.

Support review of manufacturing variation, datum strategy, stack-up impact, and process changes affecting component quality.
Your Skills & Abilities (Qualifications):

Bachelor’s degree is required. Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Manufacturing, Welding, Plastics, Materials, Chemical preferred) or an equivalent Technical Degree such as Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics is acceptable.

Minimum 5 years’ experience in quality, engineering and/or manufacturing.

Strong hands-on experience with casting and/or stamping manufacturing processes, preferably in automotive applications.
-
Working knowledge of casting methods such as high pressure die casting, low pressure die casting, gravity die casting, sand casting, and investment casting.
-
Working knowledge of stamping manufacturing processes including blanking, forming, piercing, trimming, restrike, flanging, and draw operations.
-
Experience evaluating cast component quality characteristics including porosity, shrink, inclusions, cold shuts, misruns, flash, dimensional variation, and surface defects.

Experience evaluating stamped component quality characteristics including splits, wrinkles, thinning, springback, burrs, surface imperfections, dimensional variation, and die-related concerns.

Ability to assess casting process controls such as gating, venting, solidification, tooling condition, process parameter control, and melt management practices.

Ability to assess stamping process controls such as die condition, press parameters, lubrication, material flow, and dimensional control strategies.

Experience with datum strategy, stack-up impact, and downstream manufacturing interface issues resulting from process variation.

Understanding of heat treatment, impregnation, leak path risk, finishing operations, and coating or surface treatment impacts on product quality.

Ability to review supplier controls for special characteristics, process capability, inspection strategy, layered audits, and reaction plans.

Proficient in print reading and interpretation, part measurement, gage design and function.
-
Proficient knowledge of geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T).

Proficient knowledge of manufacturing and assembly plant processes, procedures, tooling, equipment, and facilities.

Demonstrated knowledge of probability, statistical quality control, and design of experiments.
-
Proficient ability to investigate quality problems and apply sound technical judgment to develop potential solutions.

Proficient ability to manage multiple projects and lead diverse cross-functional teams simultaneously.
-
High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others.
-
Strong oral, written, and presentation skills.
-
Ability to travel up to 50% (domestic and international).
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

Master’s degree in Business or Engineering is a plus.

Technical and Quality Certifications are a plus.

Three or more years’ OEM or Tier 1 experience in automotive quality, manufacturing, or engineering functions, including demonstrated experience and capability in any of the following areas:

Statistical Problem Solving (Red X, DFSS, DMAIC)

Product Engineering
-
Lean Manufacturing and/or Manufacturing Quality

Manufacturing, Process, and/or Tool Engineering
-
Quality Systems Planning (APQP), including PPAP

Prior experience supporting casting suppliers, stamping suppliers, or launch/production quality for cast or stamped components is strongly preferred.

Location: Hybrid. This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the - Global HQ Warren, Mi three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business]
