At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale..
About the Role:
The Dimensional Systems Engineer integrates product design and manufacturing processes to achieve world-class vehicle dimensional performance. The role partners with Design Responsible Engineers, program teams, Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Supplier Quality, Plant Quality Engineers, and suppliers to establish dimensional strategies for complex components and assemblies from advanced development through production while providing technical leadership in GD&T, tolerance allocation, variation analysis, metrology, supplier process capability, vehicle builds, and dimensional issue resolution.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead dimensional integration and reviews across vehicle subsystems from concept through launch.
-
Define dimensional requirements for purchased components and assemblies and document them in the program Statement of Requirements (SOR).
-
Develop, execute, and approve virtual variation analyses using 3DCS, visVSA, RSS, or comparable tools.
-
Verify measurement-system capability, including calibration, Gage R&R, datum simulation, measurement uncertainty, and correlation to released GD&T.
-
Evaluate complex supplier parts and assemblies, including castings, forgings, stampings, machined components, welded structures, and multi-piece modules.
-
Assess how supplier processes—including tooling, fixturing, forming, machining, joining, heat treatment, coating, assembly, and rework—affect dimensional capability.
-
Support supplier technical reviews, matching events, vehicle builds, launch activities, and structured issue resolution.
-
Correlate supplier measurement data, virtual analyses, inspection results, and build findings to identify systemic variation.
-
Lead dimensional issue resolution during prototype, validation, pre-production, launch, and production using structured problem-solving methods.
-
Serve as a GD&T and dimensional systems subject-matter expert and mentor cross-functional teams.
-
Develop and deploy global dimensional methods, standards, training, and lessons learned.
-
Maintain dimensional strategies and best practices, risk assessments, influence-math data packages, design-development inputs, GD&T releases, manufacturing build processes, and lessons learned.
-
Improve dimensional capability, build variation, fit, function, and launch quality.
Required Skills and Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
-
7 plus years of experience in dimensional engineering, product design/release, manufacturing engineering, supplier engineering, or dimensional quality.
-
Proficiency in GD&T, tolerance allocation, datum structures, and dimensional variation management, including application of ASME Y14.5.
-
Experience with chassis components, complex assemblies, automotive launches, and supplier manufacturing processes.
-
Practical experience with metrology, measurement planning, CMM and scanning systems, checking fixtures, gages, measurement-system validation, and assembly plant environments.
-
DFSS Green Belt certification or equivalent demonstrated application of DFSS methods.
-
Understanding of Red X process fundamentals.
-
Experience with Unigraphics (UG)/NX PMI, visVSA, and Teamcenter Visualization Mock-Up.
-
Demonstrated project leadership, technical decision-making, and ability to influence cross-functional and supplier organizations.
-
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical information to engineering, manufacturing, quality, program, plant, and supplier audiences.
-
Flexibility and adaptability to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
