The Role
As a Safety Forensic Engineer, you will investigate and analyze the field performance of GM current and past production vehicles to identify potential safety concerns, emerging issues, and performance anomalies that require deeper review. This role combines technical investigation, data analysis, vehicle inspection, and cross-functional collaboration to understand how components and subsystems perform in real-world conditions.
You will research historical and current engineering information, partner with internal GM teams to gather critical insights, and use established field inspection processes to evaluate vehicles in service or post-crash when needed. You will compile findings, assess potential risk, and present recommendations to leadership forums including the Safety and Compliance Categorization Team (SCCT) and Potential Investigation Review (PIR) board. This role is essential to supporting investigations, informing case decisions, and strengthening GM’s commitment to vehicle safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do

Inspect, research and analyze the field performance of GM current and past production vehicle.

Work with data research to identify potential anomalies in field performance that should be understood in more detail.

Research the development of components and subsystems within the context of observed field performance by collaborating with other GM resources. This may include identifying and interviewing GM employees as well as probing GM systems for historical information related to the parts in question.

Utilize existing field inspection processes to gain further information about specific vehicles.

When appropriate, conduct field inspections of post-crash vehicles or in-service vehicles either at dealerships or in the possession of a customer.

Compile and scrutinize gathered information to resolve if the observed field performance may constitute an emerging issue.

Make formal presentations to the Safety and Compliance Categorization Team (SCCT) or Potential Investigation Review (PIR) board.

Support resulting investigations as required with background information and engineering analysis Coordinate SCCT agenda with engineers, managers and senior managers and facilitate meetings to produce concise case decisions.

Develop knowledge and/or working experience with GM vehicle hazards, vehicle regulations, federal data systems and investigations, NHTSA special crash investigations, TREAD reporting
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required
-
Minimum 2+ years of post graduation experience. Detail oriented with inquisitive nature

Strong interpersonal skills for working with employees, dealers and customers

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with BFOs, Technical Specialists, and Systems Engineering
-
Strong organizational skills
-
Ability to travel as needed (5% max; mostly local)
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
-
Knowledge of GM systems and processes including PRTS, warranty, Vehicle Development Process (VDP)
-
Knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Global Safety Requirements and Standards
-
Experience complying to Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) policy, litigation hold, and Attorney Client Privilege / Work Product practices
-
Experience as GM Design Release Engineer, Systems Engineer, Performance Engineer, Quality Engineer, Validation Engineer or Safety Engineer
-
Experience reviewing data using macros or Excel Pivot Tables, searching verbatims for related occurrences leading to trends

Vehicle inspection experience
