Role Overview
The Engineering Group Manager (EGM) - ME Body - Execution will lead and manage a team of Manufacturing Engineers responsible for Body-in-White (BIW) process development, tooling integration, and launch readiness across multiple vehicle programs. This role provides strong technical leadership and strategic direction for the BIW Engineering team while interfacing with Product Engineering, Plant ME, Design Studios, Global Manufacturing Engineering centers, suppliers, and cross-functional program teams to ensure flawless execution of tooling, process validation, and launch deliverables.
You will be accountable for program execution, technical quality, people development, and long‑range capability building to position ME Body for current and future program demands.
What You’ll Do
- Lead a team of BIW engineers supporting GVDP milestones, tooling readiness, and process development for new and carryover programs.
- Drive manufacturing strategy, quality targets, and process standards for all BIW operations within your scope.
- Oversee creation, documentation, and implementation of standardized work, PFMEAs, process control plans, and error-proofing strategies to ensure safe, capable, and stable processes.
- Ensure on-time delivery of BIW tooling, tryout, and validation activities, including run-at-rate, capability studies, and launch readiness reviews.
- Provide regular status updates to leadership on program risk, readiness, and overall health, including mitigation plans for issue resolution.
- Champion design-for-manufacturing (DFM/DFA) by supporting cross-functional teams to resolve manufacturability issues early in the lifecycle (studio, product engineering, and advanced ME phases).
- Foster a high-performance culture through coaching, feedback, development planning, and technical growth of team members (including early-career and senior engineers).
- Develop and execute long‑range action plans to advance BIW capabilities, including:
- Increased automation and flexible tooling
- Digital integration (simulation, virtual validation, data-driven process optimization)
- Global alignment of standards, methods, and best practices across regions and plants
- Partner closely with plant ME and launch teams to ensure a smooth handoff from Center to plant, including concurrent build support, issue triage, and acceleration to full rate.
- Maintain and reinforce compliance with GM safety, quality, and regulatory requirements in all designs and implementations.
- Support budgeting and resource planning activities for BIW-related capital, engineering, and operating expenses in your area.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Extensive experience in manufacturing or product engineering experience, preferably in BIW, body structures, or closely related domains.
- People leadership experience (direct management of engineers, project leaders, or technical professionals).
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to evaluate complex assemblies, joining schemes, and fixture concepts.
- Demonstrated capability to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including Design/Studio, Product Engineering, Plant ME, Quality, and Program Management.
- Proven ability to develop innovative engineering solutions to address challenging manufacturing constraints, timing pressures, and cost targets.
- Proficiency in reviewing 3D models, GD&T, and surface data to determine BIW feasibility, dimensional strategy, and manufacturing methods.
- Solid understanding of automation, joining technologies (e.g., spot weld, laser weld, structural adhesives, SPRs), and process capability (Cp/Cpk, variation reduction, error-proofing).
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical topics for a range of stakeholders.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Demonstrated leadership effectiveness with the ability to motivate, align, and develop diverse technical teams across multiple locations and programs.
- Excellent organizational and program management skills, with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously and prioritize resources effectively.
- Broad technical understanding of:
- Vehicle body structures and closures
- Joining systems and automation cells
- Dimensional control, datum strategies, and measurement systems
- Kitting, material presentation, and automation interfaces
- Electrical grounding and integration within BIW environments
- Experience deploying digital manufacturing tools, simulation, and/or advanced analytics, such as:
- Virtual build and process simulation
- Robotic path and cycle time optimization
- Data analytics for process performance and defect reduction
- Prior experience working within a global manufacturing organization, aligning standards and leveraging best practices across regions.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or related) or equivalent experience.
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.
The selected candidate will be required to travel on a regular basis (25-50%) for this role.
This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
