About GM Defense:

GM Defense is driving the future of military mobility by leveraging the best-in-class capabilities of General Motors for unmatched innovation, proven performance and breakthrough life-cycle economics! We deliver reliable, affordable, and innovative products across a full spectrum of capabilities – integrated vehicles, power and propulsion, autonomy, mobility, and security!

GM Defense is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic individual looking for an opportunity that will allow them to showcase their talents and have an impact in a strategic growth area. Our ideal candidate thrives in ambiguity and demonstrates problem-solving leadership with limited oversight!

The Role

The Engineering Change Coordinator (ECC) – GM Defense is a key member of the Engineering Change team responsible for coordinating and implementing engineering changes that impact GM Defense vehicle and system programs across low‑volume prototype, pilot, and production builds. This role ensures that all engineering changes are understood, planned, validated, and executed without disrupting safety, quality, compliance, or mission‑critical deliveries to our defense customers.

You will work cross‑functionally with Engineering, Quality, Production, Program Management, Global Supply Chain, Suppliers, and Defense customers to manage product and process changes from initial request through Production Trial Run (PTR), breakpoint, configuration control, and obsolescence. You will help ensure that GM Defense platforms meet stringent military requirements, internal standards, and contractual obligations, while supporting GM’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion.

This is a hands‑on role in a highly configurable environment where you will help shape and sustain new manufacturing and change‑management processes tailored to defense programs.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Execute deliverables in support of GM Defense and Global Supply Chain objectives, ensuring customer, quality, delivery, and cost targets are met.

  • Support engineering change implementation for GM Defense programs as a key member of the Engineering Change team and as a Change Implementation Coordinator (CIC) for product and process changes impacting GM Defense vehicles and subsystems.

  • Coordinate engineering changes from initial request through PTR, breakpoint, implementation, and obsolescence, using established change‑management and material systems and following GM Defense processes.

  • Lead or support recurring Engineering Change / Change Readiness reviews, aligning scope, timing, risks, and plant/program readiness with Engineering, Quality, Production, Program Management, Supply Chain, and suppliers.

  • Plan and coordinate Production Trial Runs (PTRs), including material readiness, build plans, required documentation, data collection, and communication of results and follow‑up actions.

  • Maintain accurate bills of material, routings, and configuration records for new and changed parts so that production and service documentation remain current.

  • Define and manage breakpoints and material consumption strategies to minimize scrap, inventory risk, premium transportation, and production disruption while meeting program schedules.

  • Maintain logs and status for engineering work orders and change requests, and provide clear, timely updates and summaries for stakeholders and leadership.

  • Coordinate with suppliers and logistics providers on change timing, capacity, schedules, and recovery plans; support resolution of supply constraints that could impact vehicle builds or launch.

  • Support prototype, pilot, and production builds, ensuring that approved changes are correctly implemented, documented, and reflected in production and service configurations.

  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, GMS/BPD requirements, ISO standards, and applicable defense quality/configuration expectations for change documentation and material disposition.

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve standard work, reporting, and visual management for engineering change coordination to drive consistent execution and transparency.

  • Be flexible to work extended and non‑core hours and travel to plant or supplier locations when required for onsite support of launch, build‑out, and issue resolution.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree, or associate degree with 2+ years of related experience, or 4+ years of related experience in lieu of a degree.

  • 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, global supply chain, materials, or engineering supporting plant or program operations or other relevant field (automotive, aerospace, or defense strongly preferred).

  • Candidate must either be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee) or a non-U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain any required export control authorization.

  • Demonstrated data analysis and problem‑solving skills; comfortable using Excel and Microsoft Office to analyze inventory, banks, breakpoints, and change impacts on schedule and cost.

  • Proven ability to work cross‑functionally with Production, Quality, Engineering, Suppliers, Logistics, and Program Management in a complex, low‑volume environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to lead change‑readiness meetings and clearly summarize decisions, risks, mitigations, and next steps for technical and non‑technical audiences.

  • Analytical ability to work through moderately complex problems, assess impact across multiple builds and configurations, and recommend practical implementation strategies.

  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent changes, priorities, and stakeholders while maintaining attention to detail.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively in a cross‑functional team and to influence without direct authority.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to support program milestones (e.g., extended hours, some weekends, and off‑shift coverage) as business needs require.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, Business, or a related field; or equivalent manufacturing/materials experience in a plant or defense program environment.

  • Direct, hands‑on experience with engineering change management, including CIC/ECC responsibilities, PTR planning and execution, and management of breakpoints and obsolescence.

  • Experience working on defense, military, or government programs, including familiarity with DoD acquisition/program lifecycles, statements of work, and configuration control expectations.

  • Demonstrated success managing multiple concurrent changes and tight timelines in a high‑visibility, fast‑paced program environment, with clear communication to leadership and customers.

  • Familiarity with configuration management and quality standards relevant to defense and automotive (e.g., ISO 9001/14001, IATF/AS standards, or similar).

  • Knowledge of GM change‑related systems and reporting tools.

  • Prior experience coordinating changes that involve software, cybersecurity, or electronic control modules on complex vehicle or mission systems.
