The Error Proofing Engineer is an individual contributor role on the Standards team focused on developing, maintaining, and improving standardized error-proofing requirements, templates, and processes that support manufacturing operations across General Motors.

In this role, you will help define common requirements, support validation strategies, improve reusable tools and documentation, and provide technical guidance that enables plants and execution teams to implement robust error-proofing solutions. Your work will help prevent mis-builds, improve manufacturing quality, and support a strong customer experience.

What You'll Do

  • Support the development and continuous improvement of error-proofing standards, templates, and common processes used across manufacturing operations

  • Translate Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) requirements into standardized error-proofing requirements, validation criteria, templates, and documentation for use across programs and plants

  • Partner with Vision Engineering, Controls Engineering, Product Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, plant teams, and external integrators to align standards and support deployment of standard error-proofing solutions

  • Support development of Statement of Requirements (SOR) templates, design standards, controls alignment requirements, and implementation guidance for error-proofing systems

  • Create and maintain standard templates, checklists, master lists, and documentation related to scanners, vision systems, human-machine interfaces (HMIs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), challenge parts, and attribute gages

  • Maintain and improve standard work, templates, and supporting documentation used by plant and execution teams

  • Provide technical support to plants and execution teams for interpretation and application of error-proofing standards, including launch support and issue resolution as needed

  • Contribute to validation planning, audit readiness, process improvement, and sustained production support

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field

  • 3 to 5 years of manufacturing experience in automotive or other high-volume production environments

  • Strong PLC and HMI programming and troubleshooting experience, with the ability to support controls-related issue resolution in plant environments

  • Hands-on experience supporting plant launches, startup activities, or production issue resolution

  • Working knowledge of error-proofing technologies such as machine vision systems, barcode scanners, sensors, pick-to-light systems, tethering solutions, torque and tool interlocks, and attribute gages

  • Experience supporting PFMEA and DFMEA alignment, SOR development, validation planning, and production launch execution

  • Ability to work effectively with Product Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Controls Engineering, Vision Engineering, plant teams, and external supplier or integrator partners

  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills

  • Experience supporting validation, layered audit readiness, process improvement, and ongoing production support

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with GM manufacturing systems and error-proofing processes

  • Experience with traceability mapping, tool-event configuration, or comparable systems used to manage error-proofing traceability

  • Experience supporting multiple plant launches or cross-plant issue resolution
