Job Description
We are influencing the transformation of future transportation with ADAS and Automated Driving. Are you ready to make a difference at GM? The Driver Monitoring Systems and Execution team is passionate about defining, integrating, and testing Active Safety and Automated Driving systems. We are looking for a Staff Systems Engineer to lead development and integration of Driver Monitoring technologies across VIP, SDV2.0, and SC3.0. In this role, you will lead development at the intersection of in-cabin sensing hardware, supplier and GM-owned software, MCU/SoC integration, and automated driving systems. You will define, develop, and execute key driver monitoring capabilities—including drowsiness, inattention, unresponsiveness/asleep detection, and SC3.0 state determination for eyes-off operation. You will own driver monitoring feature performance and state determination for ADAS and AV feature integration, ensuring robust operation and performance validation across vehicle, bench, and simulation environments. The ideal candidate is an experienced Systems and Execution Engineer who sets the standard through leadership, ownership, and data-driven results — advancing GM's implementation of driver monitoring.
The Role
As Staff Systems Engineer for Driver Monitoring, you will lead technical solutions and execution in the domain, and provide daily leadership to a team of engineers.
What You'll Do
- Lead cross-functional discussions with Software, Systems, Product, Program Management, Hardware, Supplier, and MCU/SoC teams to align feature strategy, integration, and performance for VIP, SDV2.0, and SC3.0.
- Lead development and documentation of use cases and feature-level requirements for all Driver Monitoring capabilities (drowsy, attention, unresponsive/asleep, fallback readiness, driver scoring); maintain DNG/DOORS, FMEA and Xray traceability.
- Evaluate and ensure compliance with NCAP and regulatory requirements for driver monitoring and driver attention assist.
- Lead the development and maturation of SDV2.0 / SC3.0 validation via bench integration, emphasizing scalable automation and high-fidelity simulation to drive efficiency and coverage.
- Develop and own unified integration, calibration, and validation test plans, including Xray test plans, SIL/HIL, and recorded end-to-end evidence for domain buyoff.
- Define and track KPIs using data analysis to reduce false alerts, improve context-aware drowsy/attention performance, and validate takeover readiness for SC3.0.
- Address data governance considerations for in-house vs. supplier signals, onboard retention, and privacy-aware feature design.
- Lead PI planning — clear deliverables, priorities, and timing on assignments.
- Deliver on-time feature performance buyoff for vehicle milestones (65%, 80%, 100%, RPR).
- Lead triage, issue resolution, and retros for GIMs and PRTSs in the Driver Monitoring domain.
- Provide calibration process and efficiency improvements; perform virtual and in-vehicle evaluation.
- Mentor and coach engineers; serve as technical SME for Driver Monitoring systems and execution.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Math, Computer Science, or related technical field.
- Minimum 8 years of engineering experience.
- Deep understanding of active safety systems, driver monitoring/driver state estimation, vehicle performance, and automated driving technology.
- Effectively handle multiple priorities while maintaining dedication to execution.
- Ability to identify problems, analyze options, negotiate solutions, and implement contingency plans.
- Strong technical and non-technical communication and negotiation skills; collaborate effectively at all levels.
- Ability to lead teams across time zones and serve as a technical leader within the function.
- Experience with requirements management (DOORS, DNG) and FMEA.
- Experience with Jira and Jira Xray.
- Experience with calibration tools (CalCheck, CRETA, INCA).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Experience working in Agile environments, including PI planning and execution.
- Hands-on experience with automotive ADAS and/or Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS).
- Strong understanding of in-cabin camera systems (DMS/IVC), supplier integration (e.g., Smart Eye), and MCU/SoC signal routing.
- Proven program execution experience in performance integration, calibration, or validation.
- Experience developing ADAS/AV features end-to-end.
