Hybrid:
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Markham three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].
About this Role:
This role is intended for a highly capable technical engineer who can define diagnostic requirements, translate them into robust software implementation, and deliver production-ready embedded controls for Driveline and Trailering mechatronic systems within the Chassis domain. The role sits at the intersection of system requirements, diagnostic architecture, embedded software, controller integration, and vehicle-level validation.
The successful candidate will help establish a common GM diagnostic approach across Chassis, specializing in Driveline and Trailering embedded control diagnostics and improve robustness to real-world operating conditions.
Key responsibilities
- Own diagnostic specification development for Driveline and Trailering mechatronic systems, including DTC strategy, enable and inhibit conditions, set and recovery logic, customer notification strategy, remedial actions, and diagnostic data requirements such as freeze frame and Figure of Merit expectations.
- Define, design, implement, and release embedded application software and diagnostics for chassis mechatronic control features, translating requirements into software design, implementation, and verification activities.
- Lead or directly support software implementation across controller, subsystem, and vehicle levels, including software integration, anomaly resolution, and technical issue troubleshooting.
- Use automated development and test environments including SIL, HIL, bench, and in-vehicle validation to verify software functionality and diagnostic behavior.
- Drive robust diagnostic design reviews with internal GM stakeholders and suppliers, ensuring implementation meets GM requirements, passes software design review gates, and is approved for release.
- Improve diagnostic robustness for edge cases such as environmental variation, part-to-part variation, startup and initialization behavior, hot starts, transient power behavior, and partial networking conditions.
- Support common, standardized diagnostic architecture across Mechanical Driveline and Trailering controls, including creation and execution of diagnostic CGs, regression testing strategy, and diagnostic design governance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with systems, controls, calibration, software integration, validation, manufacturing, product, and supplier teams to deliver high-quality technical solutions in a SAFe / agile development environment.
- Contribute technically to integrated chassis feature development where Driveline and Trailering capabilities intersect with braking, steering, suspension, propulsion torque management, and broader vehicle motion coordination.
- Act as a senior technical contributor and domain leader, helping raise the organization’s capability in diagnostic specification, software implementation discipline, and mechatronic systems understanding.
What we are looking for
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent technical degree / experience.
- Strong experience in embedded controls software development, including requirements understanding, software design, implementation, unit testing, software integration testing, and production release support.
- Demonstrated experience in automotive diagnostics specification and implementation, including UDS, diagnostic infrastructure, diagnostic software implementation, and related validation practices.
- Strong working knowledge of safety-critical software development and engineering best practices consistent with ISO 26262.
- Experience with automotive communication and software implementation concepts spanning CAN, LIN, and Ethernet.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability with capability to resolve unusual and difficult technical problems and drive issues to closure.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to work effectively across internal GM teams and external supplier organizations.
Preferred qualifications
- Direct experience in Driveline and/or Trailering mechatronic systems, such as AWD, 4WD, eLSD, eLocker, Trailer Brake controls.
- Experience working with supplier-developed software and diagnostics, including review, approval, integration, and issue resolution across GM and supplier interfaces.
- Experience with SW specification, implementation, calibration, controller integration, and hands-on validation in bench and vehicle environments.
- Familiarity with PHM, Figure of Merit concepts, early fleet diagnostic monitoring, and data-driven diagnostic health improvement methods.
Technical tools and skills
Experience with one or more of the following is strongly desired: C, C++, MATLAB, Simulink, GitHub, Python, INCA, Vehicle Spy, Jira, Optimus, CPPu, and MDK.
Leadership expectations for a Senior Chassis SW Diagnostics Engineer
- Serve as a recognized technical leader in diagnostic specification and embedded software implementation within the Driveline / Trailering mechatronics space.
- Drive technical clarity across ambiguous, cross-functional problems and influence design direction without requiring close supervision.
- Mentor fellow engineers in software fundamentals, diagnostics philosophy, and disciplined execution.
- Help shape reusable standards, technical artifacts, and best practices that scale across chassis software programs.
Why this role matters
This role directly supports GM’s move toward stronger in-house ownership of chassis supervisory controls and diagnostics, faster feature evolution, better software quality, and tighter integration across the vehicle.
It is also a key enabler for improving customer-facing quality, reducing false faults, preserving functional availability in degraded states, and creating differentiated Driveline and Trailering capabilities for future vehicle programs.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Software/Computer/Electrical/Embedded Systems/Electronics Engineering or equivalent field
- 8+ years of relevant experience.
- Strong experience in developing and executing test scripts using Python
- Knowledge of DOORS/DNG, GIT environment(s); plant modeling and/or analysis tools.
- Experience with test tools such as CANoe, Vehicle Spy, INCA, AutoVAL, Wire Shark, Lauderbauch T32, PCAP files.
- Knowledge and familiarity with Mechatronic Infrastructure Systems such as Ethernet/CAN/LIN, Diagnostics, Programming, HWIO, Power Management, and Cybersecurity
- Knowledge and Experience executing tests on HIL, SOLE, and other automation testing platforms
- Knowledge of software development lifecycle and testing methodologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to identify non-compliance to standards and resolve the issue.
- Able to work independently with high degree of initiative.
- Ability to communicate at different levels of the organization effectively
- Travel as required to support fulfillment of objectives.
- Ability to anticipate problems and escalate issues timely.
- Ability to independently investigate issues based on limited information, demonstrating high analytical ability to resolve complex problems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Strong knowledge of CICD process pipeline like GitHub Actions and Jenkins.
- Ability to collaborate with AI Agent
- Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices.
- Understanding of software version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Prior software development and release experience
- Knowledge of system engineering and its application in SW validation testing
- Experience and exposure to root cause investigation strategies such as Fishbone, 5 Whys, Fault Tree Analysis, RedX, DFSS
