The Role:

The Data Engineering organization at General Motors Canada is building a unified, scalable Vehicle Observability Data Architecture to deliver consistent, secure, high-fidelity data from vehicle ECUs to the cloud. We're seeking a Senior Device Data Capture SDK Software Engineer to design and integrate embedded data pipelines across diverse in-vehicle platforms, ensuring cohesive interaction between the control plane (configuration, arbitration, lifecycle) and the data plane (streaming telemetry and file-based transfer).

In this role you'll evolve the embedded Device Data Capture (DDC) SDK. The SDK is our shared, OpenTelemetry-based library and the common integration path for all application teams across the vehicle software stack. That means more than emitting telemetry: you'll work on the remote configuration and data governance that determines what gets collected, at what granularity, and under whose control, so telemetry volume and data-governance policy can be managed fleet-wide without rebuilding applications.

The ideal candidate brings deep embedded expertise in C/C++ and a track record of delivering Automotive or similar safety critical software. You will deliver an SDK targeting Android, Linux, and QNX. This will require hands-on experience scaling observability data flows from ECU to cloud. You're comfortable operating under tight resource constraints on production ECUs, and rigorous around reliability, performance, and data privacy. Equally important, you can partner across platform teams, driving integration, alignment, and adoption well beyond your own codebase as an integral part of a new and energetic team.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

SDK Design & Platform Delivery

• Design and evolve the DDC SDK's public API surface (the contracts application teams build against), owning decisions on abstraction boundaries, backward compatibility, and versioning
• Define and implement observability software across Android Automotive, Linux, and QNX, including platform wrappers, packaging, and build-system support for consumers on differing toolchains
• Sustain the library in production, triage and resolve defects reported by integrating teams, maintain existing features across platform releases, and manage the deprecation path when interfaces must change

Control Plane Integration

• Build and extend configuration retrieval, validation, arbitration, and persistence with fallback to last-known-good
• Extend the remote configuration and governance model, instance-level and global controls, precedence and resolution logic that let telemetry volume and data-governance policy be enforced fleet-wide without rebuilding application artifacts

Data Plane Integration

• Specify and implement delivery behaviors that stay dependable under varying connectivity and resource conditions

• Support vehicle-local data access mechanisms (e.g., USB-based retrieval) when connectivity is limited

Reliability, Performance & Security

• Implement runtime controls to enable and disable observability data at the granularity integrators and platform owners each need
• Benchmark and tune footprint, CPU, and throughput on target hardware under production resource constraints
• Ensure compliance with cybersecurity and data-protection requirements for local and remote access to observability data, including declaring emitted metrics and traces for certification and keeping sensitive data out of telemetry

Integration & Adoption

• Partner directly with integrating platform teams to scope requirements, unblock integration, evaluate implementation options, and drive adoption of the DDC SDK over one-off wrappers
• Contribute to roadmap planning across upcoming platform releases, balancing integrator requests against long-term library direction

Quality, Documentation & Testin g

• Lead code, design, and test case reviews, operate autonomously on ambiguous problems, and mentor others on the team
• Own verification end to end: unit and integration testing, plus validation on bench and vehicle ahead of release
• Shepherd changes through release and change-review governance with required approvals, passing quality gates, and test evidence in hand
• Produce integration guides, configuration references, design documents, and operational runbooks that let teams onboard without hand-holding
• Lead code and design reviews, operate autonomously on ambiguous problems, and mentor engineers on the team

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
• 5+ years in embedded software development or systems engineering across Android, Linux, and/or QNX
• Strong coding proficiency in modern C/C++, with a track record of platform-level integration work
• Experience designing and maintaining libraries, SDKs, or APIs consumed by other engineering teams, including versioning and backward-compatibility decisions
• Working knowledge of OpenTelemetry or comparable instrumentation frameworks (metrics, traces, logs)
• Experience designing telemetry for operational visibility and remote control at fleet scale
• Developing production resource constrained software, CPU, memory, and throughput on target hardware
• Clear, concise technical communication; strong cross-team collaboration and design documentation skills

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

• Experience integrating with control plane services (configuration retrieval, arbitration, persistence/fallback) and data plane pipelines (streaming and file-based transfer)
• Android Automotive platform experience, including Java/Kotlin and JNI boundaries between native and managed layers
• Cross-platform build and packaging experience across toolchains such as CMake, Bazel, Yocto, or the Android NDK
• Familiarity with protobuf / gRPC or similar data-plane serialization and transport technologies
• Knowledge of automotive cybersecurity controls and data-protection or privacy-certification processes
• Contributions to or strong affinity for open-source observability and telemetry ecosystems
• Automotive domain familiarity: ECU architectures, SoC platforms, diagnostics, failure and crash analysis

Compensation: 

The salary range for this role is $115,000 to $164,600. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
