The Role
The Salvage and Dangerous Goods role support plant operations by managing scrap, salvage, nonconforming material, chemical-related material, and regulated shipments. This person helps protect safety, improve inventory accuracy, support production, and keep material flowing to the right place at the right time. Work is of a technical nature using independent judgement within the limits of Global Manufacturing Systems focusing on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). Possess the ability to deal with complex problems.
On a typical day, this person works across dock activity, scrap and salvage processing, shipping reviews, audits, inventory corrections, and material recovery work. This role also works closely with Quality to verify all scrap has been processed correctly in SAP and that material records are accurate. This is an individual contributor role with broad impact across plant operations.
What You’ll Do
- Manage scrap, salvage, obsolete material, and nonconforming material activity.
- Support safe movement of material across dock and plant areas.
- Support shipping, packaging, labeling, and review of regulated material.
- Complete safety, material flow, dock, and compliance audits.
- Review inventory issues and correct record balance errors.
- Work with Quality to verify all scrap is processed correctly in SAP.
- Track scrap results, review trends, and support cost improvement.
- Support material sorting, repack activity, and return of approved material.
- Help maintain accurate records for shipping, inventory, and compliance activity.
- Support required assessments, reviews, and documentation for dangerous goods activity.
- Work with plant teams and outside partners to resolve material issues quickly.
- Support training and process understanding for scrap and dangerous goods activity.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent required.
- 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, materials, logistics, shipping, inventory control, salvage, scrap, or warehouse operations required.
- Non-managerial role.
- Experience working in a safety-focused industrial environment required.
- Experience with shipping documents, audits, inventory corrections, scrap processing, and record accuracy required.
- Basic math, recordkeeping, and written communication skills required.
- Ability to work across multiple plant functions and respond to urgent material needs required.
- Powered industrial equipment knowledge required; certification preferred if required by site.
- English language proficiency required.
What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
- Ability to work with Quality to verify scrap processing and material disposition in SAP required.
- Proficiency in SAP, Microsoft Outlook, and basic reporting tools required.
- Experience handling chemical, hazardous, or regulated material required.
- Dangerous goods or hazardous materials training required, or ability to obtain required training within a defined timeframe.
- Experience supporting salvage, scrap, nonconforming material, or dangerous goods work in an automotive or manufacturing environment.
- Experience with dock operations, chemical handling, and regulated shipping processes.
- Deep understanding of Supply Chain functions
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to adapt and work effectively in changing conditions.
- Builds strong working relationships across teams.
- Uses data and process reviews to identify issues and improve results.
