Onsite - This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Markham Elevation Centre on a full-time basis.
The Site Safety Representative supports the Markham Elevation Centre and other Non-Manufacturing campus locations in the implementation, sustainment, and continuous improvement of the Workplace Safety System and site health and safety objectives. The role provides leadership with expert consultation, education, and practical solutions to support injury prevention, risk reduction, compliance, and safety culture development.
This position ensures that regulatory and General Motors health and safety requirements are effectively communicated, understood, implemented, and evaluated across supported sites. Working closely with Engineering, Corporate staff, and other cross-functional teams, the Site Safety Representative helps identify and resolve site-related safety issues and drives continuous improvement initiatives.
The Site Safety Representative also serves as a key liaison with health and safety regulatory agencies, leading the response to inspections, orders, citations, and compliance matters to ensure timely resolution and sustained regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide expert guidance and technical support on Workplace Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and regulatory compliance matters to site personnel and leadership.

Partner with site leadership to ensure compliance with applicable health and safety legislation, regulations, and Workplace Safety System requirements.

Analyze safety performance data, identify trends, and recommend continuous improvement initiatives to reduce risk and enhance workplace safety.

Lead, facilitate, and support safety-related committees and programs, including the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), Incident Reduction Committees, Chemical Control, Test Vehicle Safety, CART, and other site-specific initiatives.

Support the development and execution of annual Workplace Safety Business Plan Deployment (BPD) objectives and action plans.

Develop, deliver, and coordinate health and safety training programs for new and existing employees.

Conduct safety audits, workplace inspections, task analyses, and risk assessments; identify hazards and drive corrective and preventative actions.

Support the investigation of incidents, injuries, near misses, and work refusals, ensuring effective root cause analysis and resolution.

Lead and support safety reviews, risk assessments, and buyoff processes for new or modified equipment, processes, and facilities.

Build strong partnerships with site leadership, Engineering, Corporate staff groups, and other stakeholders to drive safety excellence and foster a proactive safety culture.
Required Qualifications:
-
Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of experience in Workplace Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, or related Health and Safety role.

Strong knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable regulations.

Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues, apply sound technical judgment, and implement effective solutions.

Strong leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to motivate and engage others in achieving safety and industrial hygiene objectives.

Ability to build collaborative relationships and effectively partner with employees, leadership, Engineering teams, suppliers, and regulatory agencies.

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills, including experience in conflict resolution and negotiation.

Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.

Experience participating in or supporting Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) processes and workplace safety initiatives.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and business systems, including Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Power BI.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Successful completion Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, or a related field, combined with a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in a Health and Safety role.

Professional safety certification/designation such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or an equivalent credential.

Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification.
-
Experience in manufacturing, automotive, engineering, or supervisory environments.
-
Working knowledge of Health and Safety Management Systems and continuous improvement methodologies.

Knowledge of General Motors Workplace Safety Systems and the Global Manufacturing System (GMS).
-
Experience with contractor safety oversight and contract management processes.
Compensation
The salary range for this role is $76,100.00 to $114,300.00. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
