Meet Thomas Biggs: a maintenance group leader at GM’s Parma Metal Center in Ohio.
Thomas is dedicated to working hard at his job – and taking care of himself. That’s why he opted into GM’s digital exercise therapy benefit, Hinge Health. With Hinge Health, employees and their eligible family members enrolled in the GM salaried medical plan (ConnectedCare, Basic or Standard) have access to personalized, digital exercise therapy to help reduce everyday joint and muscle aches, recover from an injury, improve mobility and strength, and even relieve pelvic pain and discomfort.
Find out how Thomas uses Hinge Health to improve his self-care both at home and at work.
1. How did you take advantage of GM’s Hinge Health benefit?
The first day I got an email about the program, I signed up right away due to soreness in my neck. My online physical therapist, through Hinge Health, helped me with exercises to reduce my discomfort. They even went further by adding other exercises to help relieve my plantar fasciitis and strengthen my pelvic floor muscles.
2. How did this benefit help improve your life and well-being?
It’s great to be able to complete physical therapy on my own schedule. I can complete exercises that help me with my health issues when it’s convenient for me, not around a physical therapist’s schedule. Plus, I have access to talk to a health coach whenever I want. I can text them anytime. Honestly, this is such a great benefit for me.
3. What’s your favorite part about working for GM?
I enjoy teaching others what I’ve learned here so far at the company. Each day has its own unique challenges to deal with, so it’s always different.
4. What does a typical day look like for you as a Group Leader in Maintenance?
I help with repairs. I ensure that our tradespeople fix any issues that occur with equipment on the line. On top of that, I make sure my team members are working safely and being paid correctly. I also oversee planning for preventative and corrective maintenance work.
5. Who inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
So, I was studying civil engineering in college. A good friend of mine told me about the possibilities of industrial technology. I was very interested, so I switched my major. Now, I have a manufacturing career I’m proud of.
6. If you could drive to one place, where would it be?
The Grand Canyon in Arizona. I’d love to see it in person.
7. We have to ask: do you drive a General Motors vehicle?
Actually, yes! I just went over 201,400 miles on my 2015 Chevy Impala. I really enjoy my car. That’s why I included a picture of myself standing next to it for this interview.
