The Role
The Data Engineering organization at General Motors Canada uses data to drive the future of mobility. We're seeking an experienced, hands-on Manager to lead our software quality and test team.
You'll own software quality and test execution across Device Data Capture and Data Engineering, aligning testing priorities and outcomes with Systems Engineering and Operations to keep work scalable and release-ready. You'll set direction and develop your people while staying deeply engaged in technical discussions, driving test strategy, automation architecture, and technical problem-solving.
Success in this role requires a strong foundation in testing principles and test automation—grounded in embedded software, vehicle architectures, communication protocols, and cloud data ingestion—paired with the leadership and collaboration skills to work across diverse global engineering teams.
What You'll Do
Team Leadership & Development
-
Build, lead, and grow a high-performing quality engineering team focused on hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, succession planning, and career development.
-
Set clear goals, close skills gaps, provide deep technical mentorship, and introduce advanced testing methodologies and tools.
-
Stay hands-on, shaping automation frameworks, test architecture, and tooling decisions, and removing technical roadblocks.
Quality Strategy, Governance & Release Readiness
-
Define, own, and evolve the quality strategy for Device Data Capture and related data engineering capabilities across embedded software, vehicle systems, and cloud data flows.
-
Establish quality standards, release-readiness criteria, and risk-based validation approaches.
-
Ensure the team has the tools, frameworks, processes, and priorities to deliver scalable test coverage.
Vehicle Testing
-
Direct comprehensive functional, performance, and exposure testing on AVSS vehicles to validate performance and verify compliance with requirements.
-
Own the acquisition and creation of new bench and vehicle test environments, and keep the team equipped to execute.
Data Analysis, Reporting & Documentation
-
Establish metrics and apply advanced data analysis to interpret test results, identify trends, and deliver actionable insights.
-
Ensure full test traceability and comprehensive reporting on quality, coverage, and performance.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
-
Integrate testing objectives, validation priorities, and quality outcomes with Systems Engineering and Operations.
-
Partner with Systems Engineering to translate requirements, use cases, and system-level risks into clear validation priorities and coverage expectations.
-
Partner with Operations to align testing with deployability, monitoring, support readiness, and operational feedback loops.
-
Represent quality engineering in planning, prioritization, release, and program-level discussions so quality informs cross-functional decisions.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
-
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Automotive Technology, or a related field.
-
10+ years in vehicle and/or embedded software testing, including hands-on experience with automotive systems.
-
3+ years directly leading or managing engineering teams, including hiring, performance management, and team development.
-
Proven experience developing and executing test strategies using contemporary testing methodologies, tools, and large-scale test automation.
-
Programming/scripting experience for test automation (e.g., C/C++, Java, or Python).
-
Proficiency with test automation tools (e.g., Robot Framework) and continuous integration tools (e.g., Jenkins, Azure DevOps).
-
Demonstrated ability to set technical direction while balancing hands-on contribution with team leadership.
-
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical teams and senior stakeholders.
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
-
Experience with automotive HIL and SIL testing tools (e.g., dSPACE/ControlDesk, ETAS/INCA).
-
Strong understanding of vehicle communication protocols (e.g., CAN, OBD-II, LIN, Ethernet).
-
Familiarity with automotive standards (e.g., ISO 26262).
-
Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps.
-
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes).
